Carried Off
h" 36” x w: 24”
oil on canvas
The catalyst for this work was a preparatory study for one of Goya’s Capricio etchings ‘They Carried Her Off’(c.1797), illustrating the darker side of humanity; further elaborated with characters from Fuseli’s ‘Dighton and Forrest, the Murderers of the Princes,’ (c.1782), a reference to a grim scene from Shakespeare’s Richard III. Sin has been personified as an androgynous apparition being carried off with the victim.
