Europa

h: 70.25" x w: 80.5"

oil on canvas

Lowe’s Europa was inspired by the figure of a non-titular nymph from François Boucher’s “The Rape of Europa” c.1733-34. Further inspiration was taken from a mid-fifteenth-century drawing A Mounted Knight with a Lance by Uccello, thought to be St George, along with decorative art nouveau elements in the style of Gustav Klimt. Lowe’s contemporary reinterpretation of the forced union between Jupiter and Europa reverses the original power dynamic between these Greek mythological identities.
