Les Agents Provacateur

h: 54" x w: 40"

oil on canvas

This work exaggerates the voyeuristic tension of a nineteenth-century Henry Fuseli drawing ‘Girl combing her hair, watched by a young man,’ with Lowe staging of a far more titillating scene. A depiction of Fuseli’s drawing of ‘Two Lesbians looking into a Mirror” (c.1810-20), who are being ignored by a fleshed-out male figure copied from Watteau’s ‘Gilles and Four other Characters’ (c.1719). Lowe has juxtaposed the surrounding foreground figures as if to frame, rather than disrupt the unfurling erotic scene.
