Les Animateurs

h: 56" x w: 42"

oil on canvas

This work is a reinterpretation of Henry Fuseli’s ‘Symplegma,’ or, ‘An Erotic Drawing with a Man and Three Women’ (c.1809-10). The costume of a sitar-playing musician from Watteau’s ‘The Music Lesson (c.1718-19), has been incorporated to the bare modesty of Fuseli’s original scene, and intermingled with a sketched ensemble of ‘Comedians Italiens’ (Italian Players) also from Watteau (c.1717). Lowe has embellished this erotic boudoir tryst to the point of transforming it into an animated Fête Galante.
