Such Costuming

h: 47.75” x w: 30”

oil on canvas

This work is a reinterpretation of Henry Fuseli’s drawing ‘Siegfried and Kiemhild’ (c.1798), an illustration of the main characters in an epic German poem dating back to the 12th Century. Lowe transforms these characters into symbols of masculine and feminine identity. The luxurious garment, with refined sleeve and hand, is taken from Anthony van Dyck’s portrait ‘Lady Anne Carr, Countess of Bedford’ (c.1638), was also copied by JMW Turner in 1830, what came to be known as ‘A Lady in a Van Dyck Costume.’
